The exposition represents seven portraits of the hetman of the Cossack era. This, in particular, Severin Nalyvayko, Ivan Horseshoe, Bogdan Khmelnytsky, Peter Sagaidachny, Petro Doroshenko, Ivan Mazepa and Kosh's Ataman Ivan Sirko. Not all Ukrainian leaders had life-style portraits, and most of those preserved had a poor quality: both in terms of historical and artistic meanings. This led the artist to the idea of reproduction and improvement of existing images, creating a new iconography of outstanding personalities. For this purpose, the artist has studied a number of historical studies, consulted with leading historians, experts in the era of the Cossacks.
In the painting, the painter tried to avoid cheap heroism, to create true images of past figures. To achieve this goal, an example of living nature was used, in which the actors of the Kyiv Academic Theater named after Ivan Franko were kindly helped.
Natalia Pavlusenko is deeply convinced that the creation of a portrait gallery of outstanding figures is a prerequisite for the formation of an adequate and vivid image of the past in our young generation.
